Brief personal biography

I have been active in study and research on Bronze Age Aegean since my graduation in 1997 at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, and continued with a Specialization in Aegean Archaeology at the University of Florence (2001) and a Ph.D. on textile industry in Neopalatial Crete at the University of Udine (2005). After that, I held research scholarships and grants and teaching contracts from the Italian School of Archaeology at Athens (2005-2006), various Universities (Florence and Udine, 2007-2012) and other institutions (Greek Ministry of Culture, Institute for Aegean Prehistory Philadelphia and Mediterranean Archaeological Trust, 2007-2012), including the Michael Ventris Memorial Award (2009). I took part into many international conferences, organized two colloquia and edited their proceedings, wrote more than 20 contributions, and obtained substantial teaching experience.

In 2012 I was awarded a Marie Curie IEF Fellowship at Sheffield, for the project IISEMG, that ended in december 2014.

I have been involved in many scientific missions for fieldwork and materials studies in Italy (Populonia) but mainly in Greece, in Crete (Petras, Chalasmenos and Malia), in Boeotia (Thebes) and in Achaea (Trapeza Aigion), and have various collaborations with scholars based in Greece, France, Denmark and Italy.

Research interests

My research interests focus on the economy of ancient societies, from resource management within the landscape and the archaeology of production to household activities and trade and measurement systems. The area most involved in my research is the Bronze Age Aegean, but I studied also other periods and regions (coastal Levant, Bronze Age Italy, Hellenistic Etruria, etc.)

  • Aegean Archaeology

  • Ancient Economics

  • Measurement systems

  • Archaeology of production (especially primary production, textile industry and household economy)

  • Organization of production in palatial Aegean societies

  • Trade systems and circuits in the ancient Mediterranean

  • Resource management, agricultural exploitation and landscape archaeology

  • Materials studies: storage and cooking wares, textile tools, weighing tools
